Northumberland may be known for its beautiful countryside, historic sites, and inspiring starry skies — but it’s also a great destination for adventure lovers. Whether you’re planning a fun-filled break with friends or want to add some excitement to a relaxing family holiday, there are plenty of thrilling activities right on the doorstep of our Wooden Star Cottages.
From treetop high ropes and quad biking to paddleboarding and guided walks along Hadrian’s Wall, we’ve come up with some suggestions for adventurous days out – all easily reached from our cottages.
Go Ape at Matfen
Located just a short drive from many of our cottages, Go Ape offers a brilliant day out for adults and older children. High in the trees you can navigate rope bridges, tackle Tarzan swings, zip wires and enjoy a true sense of achievement at the finish line. Set within the beautiful grounds of Matfen Hall Estate , it’s a great choice for active families or groups looking for some high-adrenaline fun in a beautiful setting.
All Out Adventures at Slaley Hall Forest
Based at another beautiful country hotel, All Out Adventures at Slaley Hall, offers a wide range of outdoor activities for all the family. As featured on one of Robson’s Green Weekend Escapes, it offers quad biking through woodland trails (with kids quad biking available too), enjoy a segway safari, try your hand at archery, clay pigeon shooting, or even axe throwing sessions for something a bit different! It’s an ideal place for a memorable day out.
Cycle4Adventure,
Cycle4Adventure offers a range of cycling adventures across various locations in the North East. There are trails to suit everyone — from gentle riverside loops to more challenging descents. If you’re visiting the area, they also offer guided rides, taking the stress out of planning. Their team will work with you to create the perfect route for your ability and interests.
Kielder Water & Forest Park
In addition to Cycle4Adventure, there are numerous trail networks to explore across the region. Kielder, in particular, offers fantastic walking and cycling routes set among miles of peaceful pine forest and lake views — with the added bonus of much of it being off-road. Whether you’re looking for a flat, family-friendly path or a more ambitious cycling adventure, you’ll find a trail to suit. And with cafés and picnic spots along the way, there are plenty of places to pause and refuel. For further information about some of the trails available, Forestry England provides a great overview.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding & Kayaking
For those who prefer adventures on the water, head to one of Northumberland’s rivers, lakes or shores. Paddleboarding and kayaking are available through local providers at locations like the River Coquet, Kielder Water, and along the Northumberland coast at places such as Craster and Cullercoats. Suitable for both beginners and improvers, these watersports offer a fun and refreshing way to explore the landscape from a whole new perspective.
Kielder Watersports Centre
If you’re looking for variety, Kielder delivers again with its dedicated watersports hub. Paddleboarding and kayaking are available on the lake — often a calmer alternative to the sea, especially for younger adventurers. At certain times of the year, sailing and water skiing are also offered through the local club and Calvert Kielder.
Scuba Diving at the Farne Islands
Feeling truly adventurous? Just over an hour’s drive from our cottages, you’ll find the coast near Seahouses — home to the Farne Islands, one of the UK’s top diving spots. If you have a diving qualification, there are various diving tours to explore including underwater caves, shipwrecks, and if you’re lucky, swim alongside friendly grey seals. It’s a bucket-list experience for many.
Take a look at The Diving Centre for dive sites and requirements.
Guided Walks Along Hadrian’s Wall
If you’re craving adventure alongside history, consider joining a walking tour along Hadrian’s Wall. Local guides bring the ancient Roman frontier to life with stories, legends, and insight into the surrounding landscape. These hikes range from gentle family-friendly walks to full-day treks, so there’s something for everyone. And of course, the views are unforgettable.
There are numerous tour operators offering guided walks, with several departing from The Sill — the National Landscape Discovery Centre along Hadrian’s Wall. For more details on walking routes and guided experiences within Northumberland National Park, visit the Northumberland National Park website.
