One of the real joys of staying in Northumberland is the fantastic local produce right on our doorstep. Whether you’re after farm-fresh eggs for your breakfast, locally made cakes for afternoon tea, a hearty pie for supper, or to try some of the offerings from local breweries and distilleries — there’s no shortage of wonderful places to pick up something special.
Many of the farm shops near our cottages in Northumberland aren’t just about food. Some also have lovely tea rooms, play areas for children, and peaceful countryside surroundings, making them great destinations for a day out. Here’s a round-up of some of our favourites to visit while you’re staying with us at Wooden Star Cottages.
A long-standing local favourite, Brocksbushes started out as a fruit farm and has recently undergone an extensive rebuild and expansion. It’s a brilliant place to visit, especially if you’re travelling with children. Their farm shop is packed with seasonal produce, local cheeses, meats, homemade jams, and baked goods — perfect for putting together a Northumbrian feast.
In the summer months, they offer pick-your-own fruit, with fields of strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, and more. The extension includes a larger café for coffee, light lunches, and their famous cakes, plus a brand new soft play barn for little ones.
They also run seasonal events throughout the year — from pumpkin picking and animal encounters to Christmas markets – so there’s always plenty on offer.
📍 Located off the A69 Styford Roundabout near Corbridge
Hidden away in the countryside, North Acomb Farm Shop is a true gem. This family-run shop is known for its outstanding meats — all from their own farm — including beef, lamb, and pork. You’ll also find fresh vegetables, artisan bread, and delicious homemade pies. It’s a great spot to stock up for a cosy night in at the cottage, or to pick up supplies for a countryside picnic.
Although there isn’t a tearoom on-site, just a 5-minute drive away is Bywell Coffee Barn, serving a range of homemade cakes and scones (which are particularly good!) — well worth a stop-off after you pick up your supplies at the farm shop.

If you’re heading towards the coast or planning a trip to Alnwick Castle and Gardens, make time to visit this great food hall selling Northumbrian produce just off the A1. Originally a butcher’s shop in Alnwick town centre, this family-run business has expanded to include a deli and bakery in the town centre and a larger food hall on the outskirts of Alnwick on a retail park.
It’s packed with local beers and spirits, preserves, bakery treats, cheeses, and a well-stocked deli. It’s an ideal stop-off en route to the beach or a coastal walk.
📍 Located on the Willowburn Retail Park, Alnwick
As well as the lovely farm shops mentioned above, Northumberland is home to some great local farmers’ markets. These are brilliant places to meet local producers, sample artisan goodies, and pick up seasonal treats. Within easy reach of our cottages are Hexham and Morpeth farmers markets.
Farmer’s Markets take place regularly in:
Hexham – 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month
Morpeth – 1st Saturday of the month
We’ll be happy to let you know the dates during your stay at Wooden Star Cottages so you don’t miss out!
