Series 3 of Robson Green’s Weekend Escapes is here, and we’re loving how it shines a spotlight on so many incredible places across Northumberland. The programme highlights not only well-loved places but also the quieter, lesser-known gems that make this region so special.

So, inspired by the show, we’ve put together some highlights featuring some of the places Robson has visited (with a couple of our own additions) – perfect for planning your own Northumberland adventure.
Some Northumberland sights never lose their appeal, no matter how many times you visit. Here are a few highlights from all the series:
Hadrian’s Wall (UNESCO Heritage Site):
Walk in the footsteps of the Romans along Hadrian’s Wall and explore the history at sites like Vindolanda and Housesteads.
Northumberland Coast
From Bamburgh and Holy Island to Craster, Alnmouth, Beadnell and Seahouses, the Northumberland coastline is packed with must-visit destinations.
Alnwick Castle & The Alnwick Garden
Famous for its stunning gardens (including the intriguing Poison Garden), a treehouse restaurant, and castle used as a film location for iconic productions such as Harry Potter.
For those who love to escape the crowds, Northumberland has plenty of secret spots to explore. As one of the largest and least populated counties in England, its open spaces and unspoilt landscapes are full of hidden treasures—from secluded beaches to quiet villages and ancient sites waiting to be discovered.

Simonside Hills
A quieter alternative to the Cheviots, offering breathtaking views over the Coquet Valley.
College Valley
A remote, peaceful area ideal for walking and wildlife spotting.
Bellingham Village
A charming riverside village, great for cyclists and walkers, with Hareshaw Linn waterfall nearby.

Beyond the scenic walks, there are plenty of other adventures to enjoy – from boat trips to spot coastal wildlife, to visiting Britain’s most haunted castle and exploring one of the largest second-hand bookshops.
Coquet Island
A little less well known than the popular boat trips from Seahouses to the Farne Islands, Coquet Island is also a haven for wildlife. The boat trips sail from Amble and also offer the chance to see puffins, seals and rare seabirds.
Chillingham Castle
Step into one of Britain’s most haunted castles and take a ghost tour full of chilling tales!
Barter Books (Alnwick)
A book lover’s paradise, this much loved second-hand bookshop is housed in a beautifully restored railway station—perfect for a leisurely browse by the fire.
One of the great things about Robson Green’s Weekend Escapes is how it highlights the incredible variety of outdoor activities across the region. From hiking and paddleboarding to stargazing and horse riding, there really is something for everyone. Here are some Northumberland adventures to try for yourself.
Wild swimming at Linhope Spout
A hidden waterfall offering a refreshing dip, or try cold water swimming at Sweethope Lough.
Kayaking or paddleboarding on the River Coquet
A peaceful way to take in the scenery via the river. Alternatively there’s kayaking available along the coast, (such as the shoreline and coves around Cullercoats).
Stargazing at Kielder Observatory
One of the UK’s best stargazing spots, with events and activities for all ages.
Pony Trekking at Sinderhope
Explore the beautiful countryside on horseback – Sinderhope is located in the south-west of Northumberland amongst the sweeping open moorland.
Quad Biking at All Out Adventures, Slaley Hall
A fun way to explore the great outdoors is on a quad bike, with different size quads to suit all ages. Available for adults, kids
and family groups.
Cycling
Several locations now offer electric bike hire, including Kielder Forest and places such as Bamburgh, making it even easier to explore on two wheels.
Go Ape at Matfen Hall
A high ropes adventure course for those who love a challenge.
