Although we’re slightly biased and think the whole of Northumberland is picture perfect, even we have to admit there are a few places that simply take your breath away. From towering trees to countryside landscapes, make sure you don’t miss these Instagram hotspots.
The Giant Redwoods
These spectacular Californian Redwood can be found at Minsteracres which is a Monastery and a Catholic Retreat Centre not far from the stone village of Blanchland and Derwent Reservoir (just off the A68 to Corbridge.) They are perfectly aligned along the stretch of road and make an incredibly beautiful photo. Please be aware, this is the drive up to the monastery so make sure to be respectful, take some photos and then move on peacefully.
Sycamore Gap
The subject of so many paintings, photographs and the most photographed spot in the whole of Northumberland National Park, Sycamore Gap is not to be missed. Take in the history along the great Hadrian’s Wall and stop for that iconic photo. (Also, the Twice Brewed Inn is just half a mile away, so stop for a drink and some free wifi to upload your snap.)
Simonside Hills
If you’re looking for scenic places in Northumberland, then the Simonside Hills definitely need to be on your list. You can take the circular walk around these hills to experience the 360-degree view that includes the Cheviot Hills and North Sea coastline. Catch it in all its purple Heather glory over the Summer months.
High Cup Nick
High Cup Nick is a stunning climb on the western flanks of the North Pennies. The classic U-shaped glaciated valley, means once you reach the top you’ll be overlooking the full valley and surrounding landscape in all its glory. Please note the climb takes around 3-5 hours and is recommended for seasoned walkers/hikers.
The Cherry Orchard at Alnwick Garden
This once in a year spectacle is definitely worth the travel if you’re staying in one of our properties. The Cherry Orchard at The Alnwick Garden has the largest collection of ‘Taihaku’ in the world. 329 trees make up the beautiful scene, as they all bloom together for up to two weeks around the end of April/beginning of May.
