Our Top 3 Northumbrian Coastal Picks!

Our Top 3 Northumbrian Coastal Picks are the places we escape too when the rolling hills of Northumberland are hanging onto the clouds! Safe, clean beaches that our children can run all their energy off on, sledge the vast and plentiful sand dunes and paddle or body board in the waves. Here’s a look at our favourite three spots all only an hour or so away from our properties!

Beadnell – The natural leader in Our Top 3 Northumbrian Coastal Picks!

A small coastal village with big personality! It has its own sociable, laid-back culture and the choice of two amazing beaches. Our go to place for rock pooling on the smaller beach or sand dune surfing, dog walking, paddling and body boarding on the larger beach. Boards and Bikes offer a surf school, board hire and a brilliant range of coastal activities. A fantastic converted container in the main beach car park “The Bait at Beadnell” sells an unbelievable bacon sandwich, great coffee and fresh fish dishes dictated by what had been caught that night! In the village there’s  The Salt Water Cafe serving great food all and day that turns into a cosy, candlelit bistro in the evening. Prices for holiday lets in Beadnell are much more than in land and need to be booked well in advance, travel here from either Seal Cottage or Shellbraes Farmhouse in an hour or so and what’s more pick the best day to go!

Bamburgh

Many a picture has been taken from the beautifully vast beach at Bamburgh with it’s magnificent castle as a backdrop. The breadth of the sand in front of the castle only compliments it’s mass, it really is a sight to behold it had to be in Our Top 3 Northumbrian Coastal Picks! As you enter Bamburgh via a winding country lane you would think you had lost the castle and coast completely then it suddenly appears and really draws you in! Bamburgh is a very special place, a quaint small selection of shops, a wonderful choice of cafe’s and tearooms and delicious restaurants. We always park in the village centre, stroll down to the beach via the immaculate cricket ground, taking in the castle as we go. A stop at the play park for the kids then up and over the maginificent dunes to the beach. On the way back to the car we stop at Wyndenwell for an ice-cream, a blissful few hours!

Tynemouth

Last but by no means least in Our Top 3 Northumbrian Coastal Picks is Tynemouth. One of the most beautiful and historic coastal places in the region. Again we have a choice of two beaches, Tynemouth Longsands, a sweeping sandy beach popular with walkers and dogs a like! From here you can pop over the road to the Blue Reef Aquarium and see Seals, Otters as well as a vast range of sea life that exists of our shores and from further a field! There is also the beautiful King Edwards Bay, a small sandy bay enclosed by cliffs and grassy banks, fantastic for families, and at the foot of Tynemouth Priory and Castle. In King Edwards Bay you will find Riley’s Fish Shack, described by the Guardian as “the eating experience of the year”. Riley’s menu depends completely and what is caught, is good quality and available, their signature chargrilled fish wraps can be the first to go, when it’s gone, it’s gone so always check before travelling! Visiting there is an absolute treat for any seafood lover and it’s very cool, contemporary setting on the beach makes it a really a unique experience for any visitor. After lunch wander back up to the town for a mooch around the pretty shops and take in the Priory.

After all your coastal adventures come back and relax in your holiday home from home from Wooden Star Cottages!
