See the Stars: Stargazing in Northumberland
Did you know that Northumberland is home to the largest area of protected dark skies in the UK. Spanning nearly 1,500 square kilometers, Northumberland Dark Sky Park was awarded gold status in 2013 (the highest tier possible!). Recognised as one of Europe’s largest International Dark Sky Parks, Northumberland offers fantastic stargazing opportunities. An all year activity, the winter nights are darkest and ideal for ‘deep sky’ objects, but summer also provides great opportunities to see shooting stars and star clusters. Whether you’re an experienced astronomer or would like to take your first steps in experiencing the wonder of the night sky, Northumberland offers an unforgettable opportunity to explore the night sky.
What is an International Dark Sky Park?
An International Dark Sky Park is a place where efforts are made to limit artificial light pollution, ensuring that the skies remain as naturally dark as possible. The International Dark Skies Association is the global organisation advocating for protecting the night sky from light pollution. They also certify locations around the world and the Northumberland Dark Sky Park status was awarded in 2013. This was due to its pristine night skies and conservation initiatives. On a clear night, you can see thousands of stars with the naked eye—an experience that’s becoming increasingly rare in today’s urbanised world.
This exceptional clarity not only makes Northumberland one of the best stargazing spots in the UK but also one of the most important areas for studying the night sky. Visitors often report seeing the Milky Way arching across the heavens, and at certain times of the year, you might even spot meteor showers and even the stunning Northern Lights.

Stargazing From the Comfort of Your Cottage
For a more personal and relaxed experience, why not enjoy stargazing right from the doorstep of your holiday cottage? Many of our cottages are located in rural Northumberland, where light pollution is minimal, giving you uninterrupted views of the night sky.
Stargazing doesn’t require expensive equipment. A pair of binoculars or a smartphone app like Star Walk or SkyView can help you identify stars, planets, and constellations. For information about the Northern Lights, the app Aurora Watch UK is useful as it sends alerts when activity is high. Warm clothing, blankets, and perhaps a thermos of your favourite hot drink will keep you cosy during your night under the stars.
Why Stargazing in Northumberland is Special
