Christmas Markets to visit in December

As the festive season approaches, there’s no better way to get into the Christmas spirit than by visiting a Christmas market in December. With unique gifts crafted by artisan makers, delicious treats to try and buy, and twinkling lights adding to the atmosphere, the markets in and around Northumberland offer something for everyone. If you’re staying in one of Wooden Star Cottages beautiful holiday homes this December, we’ve come up with a couple of markets you’ll not want to miss.

Hexham christmas market

Dates: Saturday 14th December 2024 9am – 3.30 pm

Hexham’s Christmas Market is a must-visit for anyone in the region. There’s a great festive atmosphere as three markets combine to offer over 130 stalls. There’s the Farmer’s Market in the Market Place, stalls on the Abbey Flags, Cloister Lawn and Priory buildings, as well as numerous stalls within the stunning Hexham Abbey itself. Entry is free and there’s ample parking around the town (Wentworth car park is the largest with free parking although a disc is required) together with excellent public transport links. The market takes place on Saturday 14th December 2024. Whether you’re looking for artisan crafts, handmade gifts and local produce, it’s a highlight of the season and you’re sure to find something special.

Make It a Day Trip: After wandering the market stalls, there’s plenty more to explore in Hexham with numerous independent retailers, café’s, restaurants and pubs. You can even go to watch a festive film at the local cinema – The Forum or perhaps some tenpin bowling at the local leisure centre.

Newcastle Christmas Market

Dates: From 16th November through 24th December.

Just a short drive or train ride from our holiday cottages in Northumberland, is Newcastle’s Christmas Market. Running from the end of November and into December, the market is a bustling festive celebration. Located in the heart of the city around Grey’s Monument, extending down Grey Street, Grainger Street and Old Eldon Square.  This market combines local traditional stalls with international traders – with plenty of artisan crafts and food stalls. This is largely an outdoor market, is family friendly and accessible. For more information and to see a list of all the stalls follow the link below. 

Make a day trip: While in Newcastle, a local seasonal tradition is the Fenwick Christmas Window – featuring an animated display loved by children and adults alike! This year’s theme is the 12 Days of Christmas. For some extra festive fun, take a stroll through the illuminated walkways of Exhibition Park or enjoy ice skating at the city’s seasonal rink outside the Centre for Life.

Corbridge Christmas Event

Dates: 2nd December.

In addition to the festive markets, Northumberland’s towns and villages are brimming with independent shops and retailers, where shoppers can find thoughtful, unique presents.  In addition to the local villages, there’s also numerous farm shops stocking a fabulous selection of locally sourced produce. 

Located close to many of Wooden Star Cottage’s properties, is the village of Corbridge.  For a more relaxed and traditional festive shopping experience, Corbridge is holding its late night festive shopping event on the evening of 2nd December.  There truly is a wonderful atmosphere as this picturesque village hosts the Christmas Tree Festival in St. Andrew’s Church, where an array of beautifully decorated trees are on display. Adding to the festivities, Hexham Brass and The Prudhoe Gleemen will perform outside the church. The village shops, which include fantastic independent retailers will keep their doors open until 8pm, offering a wonderful selection of unique gifts. Stroll the charming streets, savour delicious food at local restaurants and eateries, and delight in the twinkling lights and welcoming community spirit.
