Turner at the Laing Art Gallery. "Art, Industry & Nostalgia" Exhibition

For summer 2024, The Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne is hosting an exhibition by the remarkable Joseph Mallord William Turner.  The exhibition, entitled “Art, Industry & Nostalgia”  is open until September 7th 2024.  The collection showcases over twenty of Turner’s works, providing a rare glimpse into his impact on art and society.

Turner at THE LAing

The exhibition is displayed over two galleries and explores Turner’s life and career.  The centrepiece of the collection and perhaps his most well known painting, The Fighting Temeraire (1839), is on loan from the National Gallery.

This painting is described as a tribute to the ship HMS Temeraire which took part in the Battle of Trafalgar.  It depicts the final journey of the ship as it’s towed by a steam tug to be broken up for scrap.  As such, Turner is poignantly illustrating the transition from sail to steam.  This theme serves as a focal point of the exhibition; his vibrant use of colour and revolutionary techniques, captured the transformation of the 18th and 19th centuries with a focus on the rise of steam power.  This also draws connections to the North East’s industrial past.

THE LAing Art Gallery

The Laing Art Gallery is an elegant building located in the heart of Newcastle.  The building itself was funded by a local businessman Alexander Laing around 1901.  It’s home to an impressive collection of local, British and European art, as well as ceramics, silver and glassware.  The Laing regularly hosts exhibitions and the Turner collection is set to attract visitors from across the country and beyond.  In addition to the Turner exhibition, there are numerous other artworks and collections to explore.  Furthermore, over summer, there are ‘Art Camps’ aimed at 7-10 year olds.   For more information about The Laing Art Gallery please follow the link to their dedicated website below.
