Hexham Northumberland

Hexham Abbey: A Journey Through Time

One of Hexham’s crown jewels is Hexham Abbey, an architectural beauty and full of historical significance. Dating back to 674 AD, the Abbey is a thriving place of worship, together with a gateway to the region’s early medieval past. As you wander through the ancient cloisters and gaze at the wonderfully preserved artefacts, the Abbey narrates stories of monks and monarchs. Don’t miss the interactive exhibition, which brings history to life, ideal for both adults and children.

The Old Gaol: Echoes of the Past

Step into the Old Gaol, England’s first purpose-built prison, and explore the darker side of Hexham’s history. Built in 1333, the Gaol offers a fascinating insight into medieval penal practices and local governance. Explore the original cells, punishment devices (you can try the stocks!) and learn more about the lives of prisoners.

Border History Museum: A Tale of Two Nations

In addition to medieval crime and punishment, visitors can learn more about the tumultuous history of the England-Scottish border and the Border Reivers.  The Old Gaol is home to the Border Library Collection too.  Featuring relics from the Border Reivers era, the museum offers an engaging narrative of raids and resilience. It’s an essential visit for those fascinated by the complex relationships and conflicts that shaped the borders of today.

Queen's Hall Arts Centre

In the heart of Hexham, more or less opposite Hexham Abbey is the Queen’s Hall Arts Centre.   The venue is a beautiful Victorian building which houses two theatres, art gallery, workshops and exhibitions.  The building is also home to the local library, tourist information and a lovely cafe.   There’s plenty on offer with a year round varied programme of events – to find out what’s on visit The Queen’s Hall Website.

Leisure Activities

For a dose of modern entertainment, there’s plenty of choice.  There’s the local cinema called the Forum in Hexham, which is an independent cinema featuring the latest blockbusters alongside independent films.  There’s also the Wentworth Leisure Centre with 2 swimming pools, an eight lane bowling alley, and a small soft play area.

Hexham Parks

Hexham offers plenty of green spaces too.  The Sele Park is centrally located and ideal for a leisurely stroll and picnic under the trees.  There’s also a play park for young families to enjoy.  Further out of the town centre is Tyne Green Park, set against the river Tyne.  With another play park for children and plenty of open space for outdoor activities it’s a perfect opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.
